Vast stretches of grassland span approximately 41% of China's total landmass, with most lying high on the rugged plateaus. These open plains serve as tranquil escapes, where the crisp air and the sweet scent of vegetation during warmer months offer a perfect respite.
Here’s a selection of the six most remarkable grasslands to explore along your Silk Road journey.
Bayanbulak Meadow
Tucked within the heart of the Tianshan range in central Xinjiang, Bayanbulak spans over 23,000 square kilometers at elevations between 2,000 and 2,500 meters. The name “Bayanbulak,” derived from Mongolian, conveys the meaning “abundant springs.” It’s sometimes referred to by other names like Juludus.
A central highlight is Swan Lake, the only dedicated swan habitat in the nation, lying roughly 60 kilometers from Bayin Township. The nature preserve is home to 128 bird species, including protected species like white-tailed eagles and the elusive dark-bellied snow pheasant.
Entry to the Bayanbulak Scenic Area includes shuttle service between viewing areas, and horseback excursions are also available. September is often considered the ideal month to witness the meadow in its full splendor.
Narat Prairie
Situated in Xinyuan County of Yili Prefecture, this expansive plain stretches 180 kilometers east to west. It holds a reputation as one of the world’s premier highland grasslands.
According to Kazakh oral tradition, its name was born from a moment during Genghis Khan’s westward campaigns. Weary soldiers, delighted by a sudden burst of sunshine in the valley, reportedly shouted “Narat,” meaning “sunny place.”
The prairie charms visitors with its blend of ethnic Kazakh culture and lush surroundings. Peak visiting time is from midsummer to early autumn, particularly August and September. If traveling in a group, consider renting a tent and preparing for chilly nights due to the high elevation.
Hemu Valley Grassland
Located at the junction of the Hemu and Kanas Rivers in Burqin County, this secluded basin is admired for its pristine natural appeal. Verdant hills, grazing livestock, and serene scenery create an idyllic environment.
Hemu Village, found within the same area, enchants guests with its traditional timber cottages and herding scenes set against a backdrop of icy peaks and azure skies.
June and September are ideal months for travel. In early summer, the valley bursts into life with wildflowers and vivid greens. Come September, golden foliage and mountain hues paint a breathtaking autumn canvas.
Southern Urumqi Grasslands (Nanshan Area)
Located between the southern outskirts of Urumqi and the northern base of the Kalawucheng Ridge in the Tianshan range, this pastoral region covers 120 square kilometers.
It features deep-cut gorges, snow-capped summits, thick pine forests, and flower-dotted plains. Points of interest include valleys like Gangou, East and West Baiyanggou, and Shuixigou.
From late spring through early fall, particularly July, the area showcases its finest vegetation. While summer days are cool and pleasant, winter offers a picturesque snowy landscape, ideal for skiing or simply soaking in the tranquil views.
Kalajun Highland
Found along the northern Silk Road in Tekes County, Kalajun is renowned for its spectacular blend of ecology and cultural heritage.
This region boasts striking sites like Kuokesu Canyon, Central Tianshan’s snowy peaks, and dense woodlands. Western Kalajun is home to marmot habitats, scenic lookouts like Wangyutai, and hidden valleys such as Duilanggu and Yinma Bay.
The name “Kalajun” loosely translates from Kazakh as “fertile plain,” with “Kala” indicating richness and “Jun” suggesting density.
Travelers are best rewarded with a visit between May and September, when the landscape is at its most photogenic.
Kangle Grassland
Positioned in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County near Zhangye in Gansu Province, Kangle Grassland lies just 60 kilometers from the city and stretches over 1,780 square kilometers.
It offers a variety of scenic locations like the Danxia Geopark, Kanglong Temple, and the snow mountain exploration zone. Among the most famous attractions is the Machangtan area, known for its vibrant pine forests and cultural festivities held each July by local herders.
Each season reveals a distinct charm—lush and soft in spring, golden in autumn, and snow-draped during the colder months, turning the plain into a photographer’s dream.
