Tree squirrels possess slender bodies with muscular limbs and fur-covered feet. Their unique anatomy includes flexible ankle joints that enable headfirst descent down trees and sharp claws for gripping vertical surfaces. The characteristic bushy tail serves as balance and communication tool. Size variation is remarkable - from West Africa's tiny pygmy squirrel (weighing merely 13-20 grams) to Southeast Asia's Oriental giant squirrels reaching 3 kg. Behavior and Habitat
As diurnal arboreal creatures, tree squirrels exhibit diverse vertical preferences. Some tropical species like the Oriental giants rarely leave the high canopy, while African palm squirrels forage exclusively on ground level. Their remarkable adaptability extends to locomotion - Eastern gray squirrels swim across rivers while Africa's Thomas's rope squirrel even swims underwater.
