A Guide to Creating 'Enchanted' Submerged Artwork
Watercolor resist is a creative method utilized by artists to produce fascinating visual results in their work. The fundamental principle is that wax or oily substances repel water-based pigments, preventing the color from adhering to those specific areas. You can employ this strategy to design stunning depictions of marine environments or any other scenery your mind envisions.

Step 1: Collect Your Supplies

To begin, you will require sturdy drawing paper, oil pastels or wax crayons, blue tempera pigment, a disposable cup, and a sponge-tipped brush. I personally favor oil pastels; although they can be a bit more staining for your fingers, they allow for vibrant hues without requiring excessive pressure on the paper.

Step 2: Prepare Your Workstation

Lay down some old newspapers or a synthetic table covering over your desk. Protective plastic covers are affordable and a wise choice, as accidents involving liquids can occur unexpectedly.

Step 3: Sketch Your Aquatic Inhabitants

Using your pastels or crayons, illustrate a variety of sea creatures. Consider drawing vibrant tropical fish, starfish, seahorses, or even glowing eels—anything goes as long as it is full of color. A helpful hint: if you are opting for crayons, ensure you apply them heavily and firmly to achieve the best results.

Step 4: Include Submerged Details

Incorporate interesting elements on the seabed, such as a lost treasure chest or a dilapidated pirate vessel. Your creativity is the only constraint here. Avoid coloring the empty space around your subjects, as that is reserved for the final stage. Keep in mind that any areas intended to remain white must be explicitly colored with a white crayon or pastel.

Step 5: Prepare the Blue Wash

Once your illustration is entirely finished except for the background, pour a tiny amount of blue tempera into your cup. You generally need less than a single teaspoon. Dilute it with water and stir until the consistency resembles a dark fruit juice.

Step 6: Apply the Magic Layer

Take your foam brush and sweep the blue mixture directly across your entire artwork. You will notice the pigment adheres only to the untouched paper while sliding off the waxy drawings as if by magic.

Step 7: Final Touches and Drying

Use a soft towel to gently dab away any excess liquid that might be gathering on top of your waxy sketches. Allow the masterpiece to dry thoroughly on your protected surface. Once it is ready, display your work for everyone to see. Now that you have mastered this process, explore other imaginative ways to apply this resist painting method to different themes.
